Mining Back in the Old Days
Modern mining requires the use of large, complex machinery and several miners to carry out the activity. In earlier days, people used simpler equipment for this purpose. Richard Fifer notes that among some of the major and most common antique mining equipment are:
Transportation vehicles – When cars or trucks did not exist, carts were used to transport the raw materials from one place to another. These were pulled by animals such as cow or horses. Evidently, it was a much slower and less efficient form of transportation. Hand pulled carts were also used at that time to mobilize the minerals from the mine to the outside world. These carts were operated specifically by men. Today’s automatic carts require much less manual labor.
Wooden tools – Mining tools were essential to carry out mining back in the old days. Handmade tools were created to remove resources from the Earth’s surface. These tools were basically weapons utilized to mine the product out of the mine area. Axes and other cutting tools were popular mining accessories. The process which followed the extraction stage was then purification.
Mining is done since the ancient eras. Evidence from the past demonstrates that even Roman and Egyptian civilizations practiced mining for the extraction of precious elements like gold.
