Castilla Del Oro Foundation Gets Ready to Rehabilitate the Church of San Francisco

News, by mfe.

One of the projects most important forces behind the Castilla del Oro Foundation in the outskirts of Panama is about to commence.  It consists of the rehabilitation of the Tower of San Francisco de La Montaña, where which its old style and appearance will be returned to the Catholic Church.

Eng. Rodolfo Rivera, who is the liaison between the Foundation and the municipalities that are part of the region which in colonial times was known as Castilla del Oro, reported that the funds for the hiring of an arquitect to design the plans of restoring the tower of the church have already been approved.

Regarded as one of the most emblematic religious temples in the interior of the country, the Church of San Francisco de la Montaña represents a gem of Baroque art, with hand carved precious wooden pieces.

It was declared a location of National Heritage in 1939 and studies are currently being carried out by the authorities to request the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to declare it Cultural Patrimony for Humanity.

Mr. Rivera explained that the temple was built with a tower of four levels, but later in 1942 collapsed due to the effects of a telluric movement, and was restored and rebuild with only one level.

“What we want with this project is to go back to the original plan where the church had four levels”, he stated.

Optimistic, Mr. Rivera said that he hopes the process of evaluation of these works will last for approximately two months, so for late this year and the beginning of 2012 “we will be starting or organizing the construction to restore the original design to the tower”.

“The design that will have been worked on with the restaurateur of the project has a cost of over 200 thousand dollars, because it is a very delicate structure where four original levels of considerable value will have to be rebuilt”, said Mr. Rivera.

The Church is located in the community of San Francisco de La Montaña, 17 kilometers away from the city of Santiago de Veraguas, and its altar displays pieces painted some exquisitely, or covered with plates of gold, making up one of the most ancient groups of altars in the Baroque style of the continent.
