LA CASTILLA DEL ORO FOUNDATION IN SPAIN: A NEW DESTINATION

Calañas: cultural mixing, meeting of civilizations (1)

La Castilla del Oro Foundation, disembarks with a new project in Spain, more precisely in Huelva (Cerro del Andevalo). For this reason we invite you to get to know the history, customs and life in general, of this place in the old Europe, in which La Castilla del Oro Foundation assumes a new challenge. It will develop, what its promoter calls, engineer Richard Fifer – Carles; Social Responsaibility of Second Generation.

Sixty four kilometers north of the city of Huelva, in the central zone of the Andevalo, you can find one of the populations with the biggest historic substance of the whole the province. With more than four thousand residents, Calañas appears before the visitor as an indispensable model at the time of getting to know the remote past of the Campo del Andevalo, a region which tradition has nourished itself from the passing of multiple civilizations.

Calañas has been, during the course of History, home of Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians.  The discovery of amphorae, headstones and coins, allow us to think of the existence of a Roman Villa in “El Morante”.

Subsequently, the Arabs were the following population that found shelter and lifestyle among the previous residents at their arrival, adding this portion of Huelva to their possessions to Al-Andalus. In the times of Muslim presence, Calañas was integrated in the Cora de Niebla jurisdiction, situation that remained after the Christian conquest since the second half of the XIII century.

In the midst of the Christian re-conquest process, Calañas was snatched from the Arabs by the Grand Master of the Order of Santiago through the Merida Chapter, Portuguese Mr. Pelayo Perez Correa, that at the service of Alfonso X of Castile, put it under the council of that Order.

Within the municipal term of Calañas, there have been numerous historic findings that have appeared in multiple archeological sites that have turned it into an authentic open book for historians and enthusiasts. Headstones, amphorae, antique coins, belongings and equipment of remote times give good account of the presence of the Tartessians and of the Roman Empire in the town.
